Are You Over-Medicated?

Probably. Has the US become a pill-poppers paradise? Yes.

Water Bottle Warning

Is refilling plastic water bottles safe? Reusing plastic water bottles seems harmless and cheap. As a college student, I try to economize as much as possible. Buying a new water bottle instead of refilling an old one seems like a waste to me. However, you might be exposed to bacteria.

Vaccine for Cervical Cancer Discovered

It's a medical milestone- the first cancer vaccine ever!

After a decade of development, Merck has found a vaccine, called Gardasil, that shows an unprecedented 100% efficacy in fighting the dominant strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer. The second most prominent cancer among women (the first being breast cancer), there are 500,000 cases and 300,000 deaths each year from cervical cancer. 80% occur in developing countries, 30% in India alone.

Mile High City Legalizes Pot Possession

In the city of Denver it's now legal for adults 21yrs and older to possess up to an ounce of marijuana. 54% of voters were in favor of this new law .

"We educated voters about the facts that marijuana is less harmful to the user and society than alcohol," said Mason Tvert, campaign organizer for SAFER , or Safer Alternatives For Enjoyable Recreation. Tvert continuted to argue that marijuana would reduce alcohol consumption, which leads to higher rates of car accidents, crime, and violence.

Potty Training at 6 Months?!

More and more parents, whether concerned about the environmental effects of disposable diapers or just interested in alternative child-raising techniques, are starting potty training at 6 months old.

Founded in 2003, Diaper Free Baby had more than 400 registered mothers interested in the new "Elimination Communication". In many cultures, mothers walk around with undiapered babies and quickly learn when the child needs to go potty based on verbal or physical cues, such as a moan or a grimace. These parents believe that by 25 months the baby should be potty trained. Toilet training before 2 was common in 2000, according to a study by the Medical College of Wisconsin, but with the popularity of disposable diapers and child-led potty training children wear diapers well past hte age of 3 now. This new technique is very popular, but difficult if not impossible for working mothers. The environmental concern is one huge factor that causes mothers to chose this diaper-free technique.

Cure-all Shoes

Wildly popular in England, this cure-all shoe is starting to spread in the US. Boasted to promote everything from weight loss to post-op rehabilitation, this unique Masai Barefoot Technology challenges the sole and postural muscles to be more active. I was talking with one women who saw the shoes in a store in Philly and said they were hideous looking. Apparently, some people pass up the shoes based on their clunky and masculine appearance despite the known benefits. I decided to try them out for myself and headed downtown in search of these shoes.

the future of blogs

so blogs originally started as link-driven sites that could only be made by people who knew how to make webpages. eventually, Blogger was formed and now anybody, no matter how technologically capable you are, can make a blog. After this Blogger explosion, blogs became short-form journals updated daily. whats the next step for blogs? obviously, blogging is here to stay. blogs are gaining force, adding numbers every day. I saw on AOL that you can update your blog from your cell phone. this surprised me because, in my mind, blogs are spaces for people to reflect on something then write about it instead of just scratching down their initial reaction.

first time blogging

I'm having trouble deciding how to start answering this question. On the surface, the question seems very simple, but putting into words the multiple communities you've become part of during your entire life is much more complicated. I've been trying to narrow down the list and I suppose the top three communities I'm part of are Bryn Mawr, the stable, and old school friends. I've become part of the Bryn Mawr community most recently and abrubtly. This is a new and exciting community that I'm not too familiar with yet, but am intrigued to explore. Perhaps my most comfortable and reassuring community is the horse show world.

Wow. That story made me very sad. One of my friends has an extreme peanut allergy. She accidentally ate something with peanut oil it and had a severe reaction very quickly. She ended up goign to the hospital because she swelled up and her throat closed. I can't imagine how difficult this must be for the boyfriend. Tragic :(

I didn't know anything about this "Cyber Monday". How very interesting. In my opinion, all the employees are adult and mature enough to know how much time they should devote to online shopping each day. If their work starts to slip or their mind keeps wandering they should realize that online shopping is too much of a distraction and back away from temptation. Employees should have willpower when it comes to personal online time. I don't see how shopping online is more of a concern than talking to relatives or playing games on the internet or any other computer distraction.

I can understand Target attempting to stay true to their policy and provide a distraction-free shopping environment. I feel that Target could limit the time SA is outside their doors instead of getting rid of the kettles all together. Perhaps instead of letting bell ringers stand outside for an entire month, Target could limit the ringing to the week right before Christmas or certain days of the month. I hope this won't effect donations too much becuase the Salvation Army does such wonderful work and collects a lot of money during the busy holiday season for such worthy causes.

I can never understand their accents either! I feel bad because the problem isn't that their talking too fast or too quietly or too rushed... they're just not speaking english! After asking them to repeat the same sentence two or three times, I feel embarassed and start answering yes to every question.

I think Dan's sign is an excellent idea. I agree with him completely. Who knows where signs are going to pop up now- movie theatres? grocery stores? In my opinion, there are plenty of healthy and acceptable outlets for childrens energy, such as play grounds and soccer teams. If parents provide enough physical activities for their children each day, the children should be able to calm down for dinner in a nice restaurant. Parents should also manage their childrens tantrums and misbehaviors. I don't understand why parents don't take their children outside or put them in time out. Why they continue to let their children scream at the table is beyond me. I realize we should let children be children, but in a public area such as a restaurant its not acceptable for children to ruin the meal for everybody else.

I think the law requiring headsets or other hand-free devices is excellent. I think it's important for both hands to be free while driving. Worrying about dropping your cell phone or not being able to turn your head to see if somebody's next to you should not be a concern. Driving is dangerous enough as it is. Accidents can happen in a second. If you really want to talk on your phone in the car, headsets are the way to go.

For the past two or three years I've participated in Black Friday. Some of the lines are quite atrocious. I only stopped in a few stores and picked up things I really really wanted. Christmas Break isn't that far away and I enjoy shopping in a more relaxed environment. I love gift giving and the holidays and I know I'll enjoy buying presents when the mall is less crowded. However, I can understand some people's desire to get the lowest prices and the best deals. Its hard for me to believe that Black Friday prices can really be THAT much lower than other sales.

I completely agree that most teenagers forget about Veterans day, or at least they only remember it because they view it as another excuse not to have school. Yes, some teenagers might participate in parades. But a majority of the younger generation has forgotten about the significance of this very important day. It's a shame that some of the old traditions in this country are being forgotten by the kids of the future.

I agree with the economists that it's a good idea to shop early before we realize how hard we'll be hit with fuel and utility bills this winter. However, do the commercials and decorations really effect when people are going to shop? Every year I think to myself "Wow, I should get some shopping done early instead of waiting until the last minute", but that never seems to happen. Will people change their habits and get shopping done early? I guess we'll see...

I completely agree with you Girl Meets World. I'm quite impressed with the STARS program. The fact that hte top 20% is AUTOMATICALLY accepted is remarkable. It seems like New Jersey is really stepping up to make sure students value education and realize their potential. In my opinion, I think the STARS program would provide a lot of support and peace of mind to many disadvantaged students. I think it really shows if you work hard, there is a pay off. These students will leave the community college and go out into the world with strong values and wonderful work ethic. There are plenty of respectable and extremely accomplished and successful adults in the world who came from poor backgrounds and rose to the top. New Jersey is giving these students extra help in making sure they continue to shine.

I scheduled my classes back to back so I wouldn't have any free time between classes. I like to be mentally awake and charged for each class. If I have an hour between my classes I start to get distracted and can't focus on my work. I would love to have classes four days a week instead of five. I agree with the Judge that having 3 day weekends would be nice so you can go see family or friends without being worried about not having enough time to visit and have fun.

WOW! I had no idea that Philly is going wireless. That's very modern and cutting edge!!! Thanks for informing me. I'll be sure to take my laptop next time I expect to have a long wait.

Well, if they legalized marijuana possession that would free up prison cells for people with more serious crimes. I don't think people should be in prison for marijuana possession.

I completely agree! What happened to Thanksgiving? As I was driving around this weekend, I saw Christmas lights one bushes and in windows in some of the neighborhoods. In my family at least, we wait until after Thanksgiving to pull out the decorations. If you're that anxious to put up decorations, why can't you bring out fake fall leaves and turkeys?! Thanksgiving is a holiday worth remembering and shouldn't be skipped over.

Three years ago I tried a belly dancing class offered at my gym. Tons of women signed up, all ages and all physical levels. I convinced my Mom to sign up with me. She was a bit skeptical at first, but we had such a blast. The instructor was great! You could feel your abs working so it felt more like exercise than just regular dancing. I am not a very coordinated person when it comes to dancing so technique was a little difficult for me to grasp at first, but by the end of the sessions I felt much more coordinated and natural. I was extremely proud of myself. I noticed that by the end of hte each hour all the women had a natural glow. They were all so confident and happy each time they left. It was amazing. If you ever have the opportunity, I encourage you to take belly dancing classes.

I understand the point that if the friend is constantly getting trashed it can be annoying to always be helping her out of trouble. However, I think the more appropriate response would be taking her to AA or getting her professional help, not leaving her alone at a party. Leaving somebody in a corner or with their head over a toilet is NEVER right.

I went to Saw2 this weekend as well. I love these movies because they have a meaning, they make you think. Having blood and gore just for the heck of it doesn't interest me at all. After this movie, I couldn't stop thinking about how far I would go to keep my life. I hope I never take my life for granted because I'm so appreciative of the opportunities I've been given. I agree that it's difficult to live each day like it's your last, but the sentiment is a good one. Live your life to the fullest.

It seems like every year there are fewer and fewer trick-or-treaters at the door. When I was younger, my friends and I would all get together and trick-or-treat as a group which was fun and much more safe than going in pairs. What happened to Halloween?!? Is the new generation just not that into dressing up and getting candy?! I was talking to my Dad and he was telling me that when he was young he actually had to do a trick to get candy. Think about how different Halloween is now. Its sad to think Halloween might just fade out. We have to keep it alive!!

These murders are horrific, especially considering police officers and other high officials have been arrested in connection with these crimes. A majority of the victims are under 18yrs old. These girls are mostly students in search of steady work to support themselves while getting an education or mothers supporting their families. It's sad to think how many thousands of women have been killed. These murders have been going on since 1993!!!

I can't deny that I procrastinate every single day. I find every excuse to let myself relax a little bit longer before working. I wonder how these bad habits will effect me in the next few years what I actually need to work hard and get a good job. Eventually, I'll need to enter hte real world and become an adult, but when is that gonna happen? I thought college would be the jump start to hard work and diligence...

Its been extremely difficult to come back home and fit into the same old routine. Being an only child, my parents had quite a few problems during the first two weeks I was away at school. They were used to eating dinner together, my studying in the living room, watching a movie every sunday afternoon, etc. Now, their whole routine has changed and they've become accustomed to a new lifestyle that doesn't include me anymore. I expected this to happen, but it was kind of shocking the first few nights I spent with them. They started going out to dinner with the neighbors and attending more plays downtown, etc. I know people change, but while I've been at school I've always thought of my parents in exactly the same way. I know we're all changing, but sometimes I miss the old days.

It seems positively disgusting to be using bedpans for such a long period of time. Shouldn't the Health Department or something require the sewage problem to be fixed? I mean, its not healthy for there to be sewage and pipe lines broken. Soembody should take care of this before winter becuase more problems might arise with open pipe lines and frigid weather.

Sports are a great way to meet somebody or develop a new type of relationship with one of your friends. Sports are relatively easy to understand and with ESPN and newspapers easy to keep updated. I think sports are part of the American culture and people should defiantely get into something, be it soccer basketball, etc.

I read the book Vaccine A for health class last year. The book, as you said, is a total eye opener. It made some very good, clear, strong points about vaccines and the governments involvement, especially concerning how much the public needs to know.

I agree that these enormous malls are a waste of money and resources. It doesn't make sense to take the time and money to construct these enormous malls when there are plenty of malls to begin with. First, the new malls might lose their attraction quickly and be vacant in a short time. If they are a big hit, the old malls will go vacant and lots of people willbe out of jobs. Either way, America is filled with malls all over the place! We don't need to spend more money on shopping. Our money should be going to hurricaine victims and other worthy causes.

I didn't realize how much I relied on other people until I arrived at college. For example, my Dad used to wake me up everyday instead of using an alarm clock. It wasn't such a shock for me cuase I've been to tons of summer camps, but having full responsability for yourself can be kind of intimidating and stressful. I think making friends at college really helps wtih stress levels because hanging out with friends after homework is a healthy way to release stress.

When I was younger I loved watching the Disney movie Tarzan and always wanted to have a gorilla friend and grow up in a tree house. Feral children lead a much different and ultimately more depressing life. Disney misconstrues history and real life all the time...feral children is just another example. It's really sad to think about all these forgotten children forced to fend for themselves.

My Dad is on the same arthritis medicine that my horse is on. It seems kind of weird that animals and humans can use some of hte same medicines, but I'm glad the drug works. It's kind of reassuring to know that human drugs are safe on animals as well.

I went to NYC two weekends ago for the very first time. My friend and had an AMAZING time. Philly pales in comparison. The hustle and bustle of NYC, both day and night, was invigorating. There was always something to do. I wish I had visited schools in NYC or at least checked out the city. Hopefully, Philly will grow on me.

Technology has certainly become a necessity instead of a luxury. I also think we take technology for granted everyday. When I read your blog, I started thinking about what I would do if my precious cell phone (god forbidden!) went missing. With all the new cell phone improvements, such as video and Bluetooth, it's hard to live without. I hear people groan on the airplane when the polite flight attendants request cell phones be shut off. Some cell phones can be used in "airplane safe" mode, which basically disables the transmission function so calls can't be made. Apparently, the Federal Communications Commission has put in a proposal that certain cell phones be allowed to make calls as long as they are operating qith equipment installed in the airplane that would act as an antenna.Read more about this proposal here . Who knows whether or not this proposal will pass, but I imagine cell phones will eventually be used on airlines.

I completely agree that America is a free country and freedom of speech is extremely important. I just wish that Glamourous had some point to her romantic-novel style blogs. Yes, I read her posts just because of the shock factor. However, when I'm finished with her latest piece, I feel unfulfilled becuase i didn't learn anything. Her posts just make me feel like the Internet is full of gossipy junk and that I should log off and read a book.

I think many important communities are formed through sports. Most teenagers are involved in some sort of sport or club that have built in communities that you become part of simply by joining. For me, the horse show world immediately swept me into their community and I've been dedicated ever since. Another benefit of sports communities are the wonder connections between players on other teams and older people who used to play the sport. I think its really important to get to know people who love something as much as you do.
