Boys Only

education

I recently saw a news broadcast about a all boys elementary school. Going to an all womens college, I understand many of the reasons that girls like a single sex education, but I was really surprised at the evidence in this broadcast.

They brought up the fact that girls are much more ready to learn in first grade than boys are. Since the girls are ready, the teaching goes much more quickly since, to the teacher, it seems as if at least half of the class is understanding-the female half at least. These boys only schools slow down and make sure that their young men understand the material. Since boys are also much more active than girls, much if the teaching is hands on and interactive, so as to keep the boys' attention. More recess breaks are allowed also in order to allow the youngsters to run off all that male energy they have.

The students of the schools couldn't love it more. They feel they are understanding the material and don't have to compete with their female counterparts. They also like having male teachers, whom they feel are easier to talk to about problems they may be having.

Single sex education may be the way to go in the future. With girls developing at a faster rate than boys and having such different learning makeups, this may be the answer for educational institutions in the next few years.

Intersting idea. There's

Intersting idea. There's been some discussion about this around the blog world. There were a couple of articles in the New York Times and maybe the Washington Post about the fact that more women are going to college and how there's a problem with the way the educational system is problematic for boys. Some people have said that it's interesting that when there were fewer women going to college or studying particular subjects, people said that women just didn't want to go to college or study those subjects rather than examing systemic problems. It's interesting now, they said, that boys are having problems that their first reaction is to change the system rather than blaming the boys.

You might do a technorati search for boys and education and find some of those posts. I'll see if I can dig them up. They're really interesting.

If only Haverford were still single sex...

Well this is an interesting development. It makes perfect sense, however. The question is why? Why are girls and boy so different from one another? Is that a good or bad thing? Questions, questions.
