i am a high school student and i think banning myspace blog sites and other blog sites is wrong. if the schools have a problem with people writing down what happens during their day, why do they make us do things such as journals and daily planners? it doesnt make sense to me. there is nothing wrong with writing down your thoughts... they say so in jounalism 101
If you had read the post, they aren't trying to ban MySpace altogether. They are just trying to restrict its access while at school. In my opinion, that is totally valid. My school didn't allow us to use e-mail to access a myriad of sites. What's one more? Do your blogging on your own time. Not while you're supposed to be studying.
Banning sites like Myspace @ school is totally wrong!!! My school banned Myspace, Facebook, and Xanga a couple of months ago. This totally sucks. Their reasons are because we "give out too much info about ourselves," "spend too much time @ school blogging instead of studying," etc. We blogged during our lunch period and free periods. Who in their right mind would study during lunch or their free period? I go to a private school, so we do not have the freedom of speech and expression to the same extent as public schools. We did sign something at the beginning of the year saying we would not give out too much information online and we would use caution while online. I go to a boarding/day school, so that makes the problem worse for borders, who blog to keep in touch with friends back home. I think private schools should not be able to limit their student's freedom of speech or expression. One somewhat understandable reason for blocking/banning Myspace type sights was because of the forums about our school. They totally dissed OUR school. What do school administrators expect us to do on our web sights? Duh, talk about the bad and good things in our live, sometimes in detail. GET OVER IT! To adults/parents who like school's decisions on banning blog sight, put your self in your teens shoes (not literally). Think about how you would feel if your way of communication had just been banned! THINK ABOUT IT!!!
Ok, so how will you go about rectifying the situation? What would Martin Luther King, Jr. do?
btw, at my school they have completely banned myspace.com, xanga.com, friendster.com, tagged.com, and tagworld.com, i'm sure that's just the tip of the iceberg!
MySpace.com, and it's comrades, should be accessible by H.S. students. It is a good way for people to find out more about the world around them, especially those, like myself, who are seniors and will be embarking out into the real world in a few months. It also is a good way for people to vent their frustrations and feel like someone cares. Think of this, is it possible that school violence could decrease if only those committing the acts of violence had a way to release the tension in a healthy & productive manner?
My teachers had a meeting on Feb. 8, 2006, to decide if Myspace should be banned. First of all, they block the myspace site at my school which is fine, because we shouldn't be on their while in school, we should be learning, but the problem I have is banning it by saying we can't have it at home. This is an invasion of privacy and I think that this is outrageous.
I do not have a computer at my house, so the only way I was able to keep in touch with many of my friends that are no longer in school was through MySpace. One of my friends on the site was helping me find information for my huge research paper I have to do. I see why the school boards are doing this, but I do not agree. Not all of us are using the site for the wrong reasons!! We are just being punished. And another thing, if people would read and follow the rules when the first go on the site and not put bad pictures, we would not be in this situation.
we're are at school at the moment and we are pissed off coz they have blocked the site which is GAYYY helllp
Perhaps if you used the sites as they were intended and used appropriate language, they wouldn't have to be banned. Using words like "pissed off" and "Gay" on our site, doesn't say much for your maturity level or how you must use your MySpace account. I'm sure that if your school's administration saw that its students were using their MySpace accounts to comment on a book they had just read for english or to give kuddos to their high school athletes who may have won a game that weekend, they would be begging for you to blog. But I don't think you do. So prove to your school that blogging is a worthwile use of your time, and maybe the priviledge will be reinstated. Until then, don't complain to us that you lost the privledge. We blog like adults, hence the reason that we're still on the net. Good Luck!
The reason schools are banning these sites such as myspace, face book, etc... is not because students are keeping online journals, swearing, etc.. It is because it is a safety concern. People have been stalking students online using these systems, so why wouldn't a school want to protect students privacy by not allowing it in the schools. Could you imagine the ramifications if some girl was stalked, raped, and killed and the school had allowed the girl to use the site that made all this possible. This is being done to protect schools so they are not involved in the lawsuits that come out of this. Also colleges are privately held institutions that can do what they want. Your absolutly right it is a breach of privacy for them to insist that you not use these sites while not on school grounds, but in highschools, parents should be doing a better job of keeping track of what their children are looking at on the internet. Remember they are minors, and this is to protect them from people who want to hurt them.
This is correct! I have been told the same as you have placed for an answer... It is not that the kids are being as kids do, it is as this person said, SAFETY!! :)
I agree with banning the use of myspace IN schools. It IS a safety issue. Also, while some kids are using it for keeping in touch, others are hurting each other. My mother teaches in New Hampshire and has had multiple problems with kids using myspace. The kids set up a fake myspace page for a teacher they didn't like. They also have been using myspace to bully each other. They are abusing the power afforded to them by the Internet. It needs to be addressed. Banning the use of the pages while in school is easy to do, but at home one cannot control kids. Talking to them about it, I guess, would be the best way to rectify the situation. It's complicated.
I think its wrong because during lunch some of us dont have to study or do anything. Why aloow internet when we have free time when we cant do what we want. Whats wrong with the schools its not a democracy its a dictator ship. most students try to bypass the security and fail. This is not the way to get students more interested into school. All those who say we should do it on are free time what if there is not time to do anything with chores homework and etc. If we allow them to take away what we want then they'll kepp taking and taking. So what will we do when we wind up not being able to do anything without people supervising us?
welcome to the real world. What do you think the government does? They supervise us. What do you think your boss does at work? They supervise you. When you get older you'll understand that this is just how the world works.
i enjoy using myspace and all but, schools should block it. the reasons schools block sites like xanga, myspace, meebo, and other sites like them is because kids are retarted these days and decide to meet people off line. and that is a threat to their life. if a child met someone while they were at school online, and then went to meet them and something happened to that person, the parents could sue the school. and sites like xanga and live journal cause a lot of drama, the reasons why schools have computers in the first place is for educational purposes. And as i can see, half of the people one here need to pay a little bit more attention to their English class and stop worrying about myspace.
