Some companies such as Burger King are starting a new kind of advertisement, called "buzz marketing". Buzz marketing occurs when a company hires people to call their friends and tell them to buy a product. This seems to be the easiest way to take advantage of word-of-mouth advertisement. The main question raised is if this method is ethical. It doesn't seem right for a company to control a person's freedom of speech by suggesting that they tell a friend that a product is worth buying. Another idea to keep in mind is why word-of-mouth advertisement is so effective? People listen to the ideas and opinions of their friends because they're genuine and generally helpful. What happens then when a friend becomes part of the din of everyday advertisement? Then the marketing industry has effectively ruined another good thing. So the next time you get an email or a phone call from an acquaintance urging you to buy something, think twice about where the information is coming from.

Isn't this really deceitful?

When your friends get bought out by a company... You have to wonder. Is this person really your friend anymore?? Everytime that they will suggest something to you, now you have to think twice about it. It just boils down to a trust issue after awhile. I mean, unless your relationship with that person is based on business then it might be okay. Otherwise, it's not generally a good idea to mix business with pleasure.

Tom: Hey, Sally, you look down.

Sally: Yeah, I totally blew my CSEM midterm.

Tom: Well, here, how about a Chewy Mint Mentos Sour?

Sally: Uhhh, no thanks.

Tom: Come on, they're new, and the tangiest way to feel a fresh squeeze in your cheeks. They are available in 3 sour-licious flavors: watermelon, green apple, and lemon.

Sally: Ok, I'll try one.

Tom: That'll be 89 cents. But if you buy two packs, and sell one to your mom, I'll give 'em to you for 79 cents each.

Sally: Do you miss the days when we weren't always trying to sell each other stuff? I do. In fact I have the first season of "Friends" on DVD for only $9.99. You want it?

Ha. That is very funny.

Ha. That is very funny. Thank you for illustrating it so well.

I'm not too sure this is a

I'm not too sure this is a good idea because friends might be not able to trust one another is they don't like a product. That would lead to being paronoid about who's telling the truth and who is not. Yeah, sure it'll increase advertisement, but it can also backfire if a friend tells another friend that that product is not worth going for then it might just not work.
