America Obese...

Health | healthy food

I was reading an article that can be found here. According to this article obesity in America is consistently growing. A third of the nation is currently overweight. Fat activist groups that are trying to change society's image of the body are emerging. These groups believe that fat is not always peoples' faults and they are going to use that idea as their strongest points.

Who Will Lead the Way...GOOGLE OR MICROSOFT?

blogging | politics | technology

The question on the minds of many people is who is going to lead the way of the future for software? Google or Microsoft . While I personally never knew until recently that google is much more powerful and much bigger than I had ever imagined. The idea of another software company being more powerful that Microsoft is almost unreal to me. However, there may already be companies paving the way ahead of Microsoft. But I personally have always known Microsoft for leading the way as well as many other people I'm sure. I think it will be interesting to see who is more powerful and influential...Microsoft or Google?

Sick of This Weather Already?

weather

First of all I don't know about everyone else but I am so sick of all of this rain. As I was walking around campus this evening with my friend I was freezing. Of course this was probably because I was walking around in shorts, but still it is freezing out. Now, I can handle the cold and I can handle rain. But I am not fond of cold, rain, and wind all together at once. And tonight we have rain wind and the cold.

Single Sex Schools: Beneficial

academics | education | gender

Being at a single sex school has often been said to be more beneficial for learning than a coed school. Well last week in Newsweek there was an entire article about how beneficial an all womans school is. But the part that I found to be pretty exciting was that Bryn Mawr was the only womans school mentioned throughout the article. It talked about how by being at Bryn Mawr the author herself, was a

Ramadan Dinner Gets A Huge Turnout

culture | current events | Ramadan

Last night Bryn Mawr and Haverford's Muslim Student Association hosted a Bi-Co Ramadan Dinner. I recieved a couple emails about the dinner in which I was told that the food would be catered Indian food, and it sounded like fun so I decided to go. I anticipated that there would be a large number of Muslim students attending considering the type of occasion that it was. What I did not anticipate was how many non-muslim students would attend.

Dedication during Rita.

rita

I found this article to be interesting. During the rains of hurricane Rita one group kept the community going. "Christians Tailgate Bar and Grill" remained open during Rita. Most of the other places in the area closed down during the hurricane. Christians kept everyone going during the storm and after the storm with food. The residents of the area who remained there really appreciated Christians dedication.

Rita.

Katrina

As we all know Louisiana was hit hard by hurricane Katrina only a short while ago. The city of New Orleans was left in shambles and left the whole state in a state of panic. As if hurricane Katrina, wasnt enough for Louisiana, the state was recently hit again by hurricane Rita. However, and fortunately Rita was no Katrina. After experiencing both, Katrina and Rita, Louisiana is ready to start to be cleaned up and put back together.

Silly way to procrastinate.....

fashion

do you ever feel like you are the last to know about the latest celeb news, and gossip? Well i know i almost always have no idea about what is going on in hollywood and wiht my favorite tv stars, or least favorite for that matter. So in an attempt to avoid homework i was doing a search on celeb news and i found this rather silly site with little captions on what our favorite selbs are doing or wearing and what not.

Katrina....

Katrina | politics

So here I am, I just finished some homework and I decided to kind of "surf the web". During my exploration I found a blog pertaining to the disaster that is Hurrican Katrina. It talks about the political aspect of Katrina and how it is being handled. I found it rather interesting to read. link

Where has all our time gone?

Hey everyone! This does not really go along with our csem or with any recent polls but I just feel like all of our time has just disappeared. Ever since we arrived for our customs week its been nonstop action. During customs week we had activity after activity with almost no time to ourselves. Then we went right into our class schedule. And all of a sudden I feel like all of my time has just practically evaporated. It is almost overwhelming to see how in one week of going to classes wome of us are so exhausted. Does anyone else feel like all of their time has nearly disappeared?

Community

community

So here I am writing my first blog, how exciting!! I am the oldest of two children and I havea younger brother. In high school I was always involved in the communities at my school. I did newspaper for a while, and then I also was a part of the sports teams. My high school was a very small school. My graduating class comprised of about 57 students!! Tiny, I know! Sometimes it was great that it was so small and at other times it was anything but great! It was awesome that we all knew each other. Anyways it is really exciting to be in a bit of a bigger community now!

After reading the blog and everyones comments I have to say I think it is a little bit of both. Yes, time management would be the simple answer to the situation of students haveing way way too much work and not enough time to get through it and get enough sleep. I have said to myself so many times this semester "if i manage my time and do a little bit of my paper this weekend, I wont be up all night next week". And in high school the whole time management thing would have worked and usually did work well. But, after my personal experiences here, and I'm sure I dont have nearly as much work as other people, time management is really hard its almost impossible. I have to say that someothing ALWAYS comes up, the weekend that I was planning on working on that paper, a different professor assigns something else thats due on tuesday so I spend the weekend not working on my paper but working on something else. Of course this is just one example I'm sure there are many other things that cna come up. But I just feel that it would be nice if time management were as simple to do as it sounds, but the thing is that it is not simple at all. And of course, it would be really great if professors could lighten up, but they have to accomplish a certain amount in a certain amount of time. So while, it seems unfair I think that in most cases we just kind of have to suffer through all the work and hope it gets done.

I think that reusing water bottles is a common thing for everyone. However, I think it may be a little more popular among college students. I, too reuse water bottles. But it is important to remember that the water bottles that are put in the dishwasher are nalgenes, or something of a similar consistency. In my opinion, you are probably just better off buying a nalgene or some type of sturdy water bottle like it. Becuase, it is not worth risking your health of reusing a water bottle (ie poland spring, aquafina) over and over again. If you are a constant water drinker, it might just be the healthier, and in the end more economic solution for you.

I would have to say that ADHD in addition to other diagnoses are becoming more and more common in the United States. These diagnoses are significantly more common in the youth of America than in adults. I think that to an extent we as a nation may definitely be overmedicated but only in certain instances. I am not sure if ADHD is completely an overmedicated situation. I'm sure that in some situations children in particular are diagnosed with ADHD when they really should not be, and in those cases the diagosis definitely does serve as an excuse for "undesirable" behavior. However, at the same time there are definitely people who really do suffer from ADHD and it is not an overmedication or an excuse type of situation. I think this type of situation is very common in the United States where in certain cases people are being medicated unnecessarilly. The real question might be why are people being overmedicated so frequently? ADHD is only one of the many diagnoses that is becoming more and more common, other diagnoses that are becoming more common particularly in the US are diabetes and obesity. The other question is why are these diagnoses only becoming more popular in the United States and not anywhere else?

After reading your post about what a small world phenomenon sites such as myspace, xanga, live journal and so on are, I definitely agree. However, I feel as though we have always been told since we were little to becareful as to who we talk to and associate with online. Perhaps, the problem is not only the xangas and myspaces but also that people are having too much access to the internet to young with no parental controls. But I definitely do agree with the idea that sites like these do contribute to this small world pheomenon.

I know exactly what you mean when you say that some movies are just not good at all and have no point. I also like comedy, but I feel that I only like it to a point. I do not like movies that have almost no purpose and are just stupid. However, I have not seen that many movies where there has been absolutely no point- I try to avoid them if it is possible. And I have never seen "Dazed and Confused" so I may look into that.

I was watching tv today when a news brief came on about Hurricane Wilma. It is crazy to think how strong these hurricanes have been and to think that there is yet another one on the way is just so crazy in my mind. I mean with everything that has been happenning lately earthquake in South Asia, these hurricanes it is just hard for me and many people to imagine that there is yet another one on the way and there is nothing we can do to prevent it...of course. But in all seriousness how much more can the world and society take?

Well, I definitely agree with you that it is rather annoying to have to peel off the sticker every time I have a piece of fruit. I mean while it takes maybe five seconds at most to peel the little sticker off, I still am not a fan. The fact that they now put the website for fruit on those little stickers is a real indication of how prominent advertising and the internet are in our lives. I mean by eating a piece of fruit we are seeing an advertisement. I feel like ways in which people are advertising is becoming more and more creative all the time.

Well, I can totally agree with you on the whole not seeing the true value of vitamins. I personally, don't really take vitamins very consistantly either. However, after reading the post on vitamins I might be a little more consistant from now on.

I know exactly what you are talking about and how you feel! I feel like for the past week or so I have been waking up to the lovely sounds of the jackhammering outside my room. And if waking up to it was not enough I also am welcomed with the sound whenever I come into my room during the day. As I often try to sit and do work i find it to be nearly impossible due to the obnoxious sounds of the jackhammering going on outside my room. Of course, I could close the windows but then I would have no air, I find it to be a real dilemma.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have spent a couple of uneventful weekends at haverford. I feel like many of the boys are socially awkward also. But I do think it is even more awkward when the haver boy is a friend of a friend versus someone who u have actually met on your own, but thats just my thought. I also think that not only are the haver boys socially awkward on the weekends when we go to haverford, many of them are also awkward when they are here in classes or in the dining halls where they totally seclude themselves. I think that if you are fed up with haverford it may be time to try your luck out at swat, however, i don't know if that will be any better.

I have not actually experienced any type of culture shock personally, being from NJ. But I have experienced the difference in culture between here and perhaps the south for example. In talking to my friends who are from the south I have been able to notice the differences for little trivial things and slightly more important things.
